“She’s finally asleep,” Nicole said softly as she walked up next to the lounge chair where I was sitting. “She’s a sweet little girl.”

“She’s a cutie. Those fat cheeks of hers kill me.” I spread out my legs and motioned for Nicole to join me on the chair. “Sit with me?”

Nicole moved to the end of the chair and sat down before she scooted backwards between my bent knees. I reached up and gently pulled her shoulders back until she rested against me. Once my arms were wrapped around her and resting on her still mostly flat belly, I sighed.

“I’ll bet you never show up and bring me dinner again, huh?” I chuckled. “I had some leftovers while you were bathing Cydney. They were damn good. Oh, and Mesha said thanks and she enjoyed it. The hussy took the food off my desk.”

Nicole laughed softly, “I’ll bring her a plate next time.”

“She’s a character. She can find her own damn food.”

“She loves you, Hank.”

“Well, she should,” I scoffed. “I’m her big brother. A damn good one, too, if I must say.”

“What?”

“Mesha and I have the same father. Her mother was a hooker who worked the same area as mine. They were friends.”

“You share a father? Really?”

“Yeah, but we didn’t realize it for a long time,” I explained. “She came to work at Cookies when she was 18. She was trying to get some money together to leave town and get away from the shit she faced growing up with a mom like hers. I could relate. We got to know each other and some shit happened. I realized who her mother was and found Mesha and I had known each other for years. I'd even watched her a few times when she was small.”

“Holy shit,” Nicole whispered. “No wonder she’s so protective of you.”

“Yeah,” I chuckled. “She’s a guard dog, that’s for sure. The guys in my club know who she is and now you do, but no one at the bar knows. We just thought it would be easier that way.”

“Does she know your father?”

“She’s seen him around just like I have. She remembers him coming around when she was small. He brought her gifts and candy sometimes. She saw him last year at some fundraiser she went to with Jayla for the hospital. He was there with his wife and looked right through her.”

“What an asshole.”

“No telling how many more kids he has floating around.”

“You don’t, do you?”

“What?”

“Have any kids floating around I should know about?”

“I’m hurt you think I’d be that way,” I frowned. “Do you think that’s the kind of man I am?”

“No,” Nicole assured me. “I should have never even asked. I know you well enough to know you’d never turn your back on your child.”

“You think I’m in this just for the baby, huh?”

“I do,” Nicole whispered. “And that’s okay.”

“No, Doc,” I said softly as I kissed her neck. “That baby is just a bonus and the reason you’re giving me another chance. I want you because you’re you.
